About Half are More Inclined to Avoid Air Travel After September 11. |
Lottopol participants were asked: Which factor makes you more inclined to avoid air travel after September 11?
The latest results are:
I am not in any way more inclined to avoid air travel after September 11 (50.84%)
Fear of being harmed in a terrorist hijacking (34.59%)
The inconveniences such as the long lines and delays due to heightened air travel security procedures (15.79%)
However, there are significant differences between men and women regarding the issue of air travel.
63.16% of women said that they were more inclined to avoid air travel after the events of September 11. Among women who said that they were more inclined to avoid air travel after the events of September 11, those giving "fear of being harmed in a terrorist hijacking" as the reason outnumbered those citing inconveniences such as the long lines by a 5 to 1 margin.
In contrast 56.73% of men say that are not inclined to avoid air travel after September 11. Thus, only 42.27% of men said that they were more inclined to avoid air travel after the events of September 11. Furthermore, a significant percentage of men who said that they were more inclined to avoid air travel after the events of September 11, cited the inconveniences such as the long lines and delays due to heightened air travel security procedures rather than "fear of being harmed in a terrorist hijacking" as the reason.
In contrast to the 5 to 1 ratio by which women who said they were more inclined to avoid air travel now cited fear over inconvenience; men who said they were more inclined to avoid air travel now, cited fear over inconvenience by only a 4 to 3 margin.

Interesting Implications of the Results:
|
A relatively significant minority of those avoiding air travel, cited the inconveniences such as the long lines and delays due to heightened air travel security procedures as the factor causing them to avoid air travel. This has interesting implications.
Heightened security measures may reduce fears of terrorist attacks, but may hurt the airlines by causing many to avoid air travel because of the increased inconvenience factor.
While about half of those polled indicated a greater inclination to avoid air travel after September 11, the results are not evenly spread out in terms on frequent flyers vs. non-flyers. The airlines can take some comfort in the fact that it was people who had previously indicated that they rarely or never flew, which were most inclined to avoid air travel after September 11. 56.78% of those who had previously indicated that they rarely or never flew said that they were inclined to avoid air travel after September 11. Only 44% of those who indicated that they flew about once a year, and only 41.94% of those who indicated that they flew about four times a year said that they were inclined to avoid air travel after September 11.
The poll respondents had previously indicated that men flew more than women did.
32.50% of men said that they flew about once a year as compared to 30.06% of the women
16.53% of men said that they flew about four times a year as compared to 12.02% of the women
3.65% of men said that they flew about once a month as compared to 1.63% of the women
1.40% of men said that they flew about once a week as compared to 0.42% of the women
