Periodically, this newsletter will highlight some of the more interesting results obtained from the polling conducted by LOTTOPOL.

Support for Stem-Cell Research Related to Cable News Viewing Patterns.
The participants were asked the question: What is your opinion on stem-cell research where material from discarded embryos may be used to cure diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's?
The Latest Results Were: (% of total answers)
All such research should be banned. (10.96%)
The research should be funded by the government.(39.28%)
The research should be permitted but not funded by the government.(18.72%)
No opinion or would rather not answer that question. (31.04%)


The results can be broken down by the participant's cable news viewing habits.
Which shows, for those who indicated that they mostly watch CNN:
The Answers Were:
All such research should be banned. (9.19%)
The research should be funded by the government.(42.70%)
The research should be permitted but not funded by the government.(22.70%)
No opinion or would rather not answer that question. (25.41%)

For those who indicated that the Fox News Channel was their favorite cable news network:
The Answers Were:
All such research should be banned. (16.67%)
The research should be funded by the government.(42.31%)
The research should be permitted but not funded by the government.(23.08%)
No opinion or would rather not answer that question. (17.95%)

For those who indicated that CNBC was their favorite cable news network:
The Answers Were:

Interesting Aspects of the Results:
While many more people favor stem-cell research than oppose it, the cable news network that people indicate they view most seems to have a significant impact on their positions regarding stem-cell research.

Those who indicate that Fox News Channel is their favorite cable news source are more likely to oppose embryonic stem-cell research. 16.67% of Fox News Channel viewers would ban all such research. Only 9.19% of CNN viewers would ban embryonic stem-cell research. For those who indicate that CNBC is the favorite cable news source only 6.90% would ban embryonic stem-cell research and 51.72% favor government funding for embryonic stem-cell research.

The previous LOTTOPOL POLL RESULTS NEWSLETTER indicated that even among those who say they are pro-life regarding the abortion issue there are more who favor government funding for stem-cell research.(26.95%) than there are those who would ban such research. (23.35%). A significant number of those who say they are pro-life regarding the abortion would permit stem-cell research,(25.75%) but would not favor government funding. Those who would permit stem-cell research but oppose government funding may be motivated by fiscal policy concerns rather that ethical or religious considerations.

Those on the pro-choice side of the abortion issue overwhelming support government funding for stem-cell research. Only 4.85% would ban stem-cell research while 54.10% favor government funding. Interesting a quarter of those in the pro-choice category would permit stem-cell research but oppose government funding. This is essentially the same percentage of those who say they are pro-life regarding the abortion issue. The 25% of both pro-life and pro-choice people who would permit to not use government funds for stem-cell research would thus appear to be motivated by fiscal policy concerns rather that ethical or religious considerations.


The previous LOTTOPOL POLL RESULTS NEWSLETTER also reported that, as might be expected, those impacted by diseases such as diabetes are those most in favor of government funding for stem cell research. Of those with diabetes, 70.27% favored the use government funds for stem-cell research while only 5.41% would ban such research.
