Periodically, this newsletter will highlight some of the more interesting results obtained from the polling conducted by LOTTOPOL.
Most say that they will use the tax rebates to pay bills or reduce debt and not make any additional purchases.
The participants were asked the question: How will you use the $300 rebate that each taxpayer will receive?
The Answers Were: (% of total answers)
Spend most of it on things I would not have purchased otherwise.(10.51%)
Pay bills or reduce debt and not make any additional purchases.(34.44%)
Invest or save most of it.(14.05%)
I am not eligible to receive the USA tax rebate.(23.29%)
I would rather not answer that question.(16.71%)
If the responses from those who would rather not answer or considered themselves ineligible are removed then the results become:
Spend most of it (17.51%)
Pay bills (59.07%)
Invest or save (23.42%)
The results can be broken down by how the participants voted for president. Which shows, for those who indicated that they voted for Bush in 2000:
Spend most of it(16.36%)
Pay bills (50.0%)
Invest or save (22.73%)
I am not eligible (4.55%)
I would rather not answer (6.36%)
If the responses from those who would rather not answer or considered themselves ineligible are removed then the results for Bush voters become:
Spend most of (20.34%)
Pay bills (54.24%)
Invest or save (25.42%)
For those who indicated that they voted for Gore in 2000:
Spend most of it(20.69%)
Pay bills (43.97%)
Invest or save (16.38%)
I am not eligible (7.76%)
I would rather not answer (11.21%)
If the responses from those who would rather not answer or considered themselves ineligible are removed then the results for Gore voters become:
Spend most of it (27.27%)
Pay bills (52.27%)
Invest or save (20.45%)
Interesting Aspects of the Results:
Most respondents indicated that that if the received the $300 rebates that they would use it to pay bills. Bush and Gore voters were quite similar in that respect. However, for those who had other plans for the rebates Bush and Gore voters differed. 27.27% of Gore voters as compared to only 20.34% of Bush voters planned to spend the rebate on things they would not have purchased otherwise.
In contrast 25.42% of Bush voters as compared to only 20.45% of Gore voters plan to invest or save most of the rebate.
Surprising large numbers of participants indicated that that did not believe that they were eligible to receive the rebates. There may be some confusion in this regard. Everyone who filed a tax return in 2001 is eligible to receive the $300 per person rebate. This is true even for those who did not owe or pay any taxes for 2000.
