Periodically, this newsletter will highlight some of the more interesting results obtained from the polling conducted by LOTTOPOL.

Does the Internet have a Net Beneficial Impact in Terms of Reducing Harmful Behavior ?

In a recent Lottopol poll, www.lottopol.com a question was:

Has the internet increased or decreased the amount of gambling for money that you do?

The choices and results from those responding to the question were:

I gamble less for money now because of the availability of free lottos and sweepstakes on the internet. (29.8%)

I gamble more for money now because of the internet.(6.1%)

The amount of gambling for money I do now has not been affected by the internet(64.1%)


Thus, almost 5 timed as many people indicated that the availability of free lottos and sweepstakes on the internet has reduced the amount of gambling they do for money as compared to increasing it.

This is a very significant result. Compulsive gambling is unique among psychological disorders in that the harm resulting from the disorder is essentially economic.

Were it not for the economic losses suffered by compulsive gamblers, and their families, A compulsive gambler would be no more a patient with a disorder requiring treatment than would someone who spent much of his time doing crossword puzzles.

Even, without considering the compulsive gambling problem, many observers of societal and economic trends have denounced the economic effects of gambling by calling it a "tax on the poor". They claim that people with limited means may be diverting some of their income from necessities because of gambling.

Those diagnosed with gambling disorders are thought to be "addicted" to the stimulus associated with activity of gambling. Historically using technology to cure addiction has not been very successful. For example, cocaine was originally developed as a cure for alcoholism.

However, free online gambling may be delivering some of the stimulus that could previously only obtained by gambling for money. Lottopol, which is advertising supported, gives participants free lotto tickets in return for answering poll questions.

The overall statistics show that those who are gambling less for money because of the internet outnumber those who are gambling more for money because of the internet by almost a 5 to 1 ratio.

The negative economic impact of gambling, especially compulsive gambling is considered most harmful when it affects families.

The poll results are that for those that are married, the ratio of gambling less for money because of the Internet is 8.3 to one as compared to only 4.4 to one for those that are single.

When the results are broken down in terms of the presence of children in the household a similar beneficial pattern is seen.

For those that have children younger than 12 in their households, the ratio of gambling less for money to more because of the Internet is 6.0 to 1. For those who reported no children in their household the ratio was only 3.4 to 1.

In light of the various reports on television news programs relating tragic stories of mothers gambling away the money that was needed for diapers, this would seem to be significant evidence that technology is alleviating a psychological disorder.
