Which issues will the most important in determining voter’s choices in the next congressional elections? |
|
In a recent Lottopol poll, www.lottopol.com
a question was:
Which issue, if any listed below, will the most important in determining your vote in the next congressional elections?
The choices and results from those who responded to the question by selecting once of the choices listed were:
a candidate’s position on abortion. (4.83%)
a candidate’s position on balancing the budget. (9.44%)
a candidate’s position expanding Medicare to include prescription drugs. (37.70%)
a candidate’s position social security. (10.63%)
a candidate’s position on stem cell research. (3.12%)
a candidate’s position on tax policy. (10.11%)
a candidate’s position on war on terrorism. (20.59%)
Thus, the single factor that the largest number said will be the most important in determining their vote in the next congressional elections was a candidate’s position expanding Medicare to include prescription drugs. That was the position selected by almost twice as many as the second largest choice, a candidate’s position on war on terrorism.

This does not bode well for the Republicans. |
An earlier poll question was:
Which proposal, if any, for elderly Americans prescription drug coverage do you favor?
The responses to that question were:
The Democratic plan to make prescription drug coverage an entitlement as part of Medicare. (67.30%)
The Republican plan to pay subsidies to insurance companies that offered discounted prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans. (14.89%)
I do not think the government should provide any prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans. (5.00%)
No opinion(12.81%)
Over two-thirds favored the Democratic plan to make prescription drug coverage an entitlement as part of Medicare, while only about 15% favored the Republican plan to pay subsidies to insurance companies that offered discounted prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans. Even adding the 5% that did not think the government should provide any prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans, the plan to make prescription drug coverage an entitlement as part of Medicare is favored by more than three to one.
Among those who said a candidate’s position expanding Medicare to include prescription drugs will be the most important issue in determining their vote in the next congressional elections, an overwhelming number favored the Democratic plan to make prescription drug coverage an entitlement as part of Medicare.
There responses to the earlier question were:
The Democratic plan to make prescription drug coverage an entitlement as part of Medicare. (86.29%)
The Republican plan to pay subsidies to insurance companies that offered discounted prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans. (7.79%)
I do not think the government should provide any prescription drug coverage to elderly Americans. (1.25%)
No opinion(4.67%)
Among those who selected other issues be the most important issue in determining their vote in the next congressional elections, their views on those issues often still split in ways favoring the Democrats. For example 3.12% selected a candidates position on stem-cell research as the most important issue.
A previous poll question was: What is your view of President Bush's decision to allow only funding for research involving stem cell lines already extracted from embryos? Of those who selected stem-cell research as their most important issue, less than 40% had indicated that they though Bush was correct in not allowing funding for extracting stem cells for medical research from surplus frozen embryos that would otherwise be discarded.
Among those who selected stem-cell research as their most important issue, the majority had selected the choice: “Surplus frozen embryos that would otherwise be discarded should also be used for research to develop cures for ailments such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease.”
