Those who thought that McCain would be more effective than Bush in conducting the war in Afghanistan believed that McCain would have been quicker to send in substantial ground forces with the aim of quickly eliminating the Taliban.
One comment was that in the 2000 South Carolina Republican Primary, the American Christian Fundamentalists ultimately “saved the asses” of the Afghani Islamic Fundamentalists. Bush’s nomination was secured when he defeated McCain in the South Carolina Republican Primary. McCain was thought to have a chance in that primary since South Carolina has the highest percentage of veterans in the nation. However, a tremendous effort by the Christian Fundamentalists led by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, is credited with giving Bush the victory of McCain in South Carolina. Many believe that if McCain had won in South Carolina he would have be nominated and then would have easily beaten Al Gore in the general election. The results above which show much more support for McCain among Gore voters tends to reaffirm that view.
To the extent that McCain would have taken much more aggressive action against the Fundamentalist Taliban in Afghanistan, the American Christian Fundamentalists ultimately saved Afghani Islamic Fundamentalists from the fate that McCain would have inflicted upon him had the 2000 South Carolina Republican Primary gone the other way.
