Periodically, this newsletter will highlight some of the more interesting results obtained from the polling conducted by LOTTOPOL.

Married Women Really Hate the Taliban.

Lottopol participants were asked:
Should the USA use military force to remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan?

The latest results are:
The Taliban should be removed by the use of American military force. (80.4%)
The Taliban should not be removed by the use of American military military force. (9.3%)
No opinion. (10.3%)

Thus, those with opinions on the issue favored the use military force to remove the Taliban from power by a ratio of 8.7 to 1.
Interestingly, women favored the use military force to remove the Taliban from power by a ratio of 10.0 to 1.
Men favored the use military force to remove the Taliban from power by a ratio of only 8.1 to 1.

Interesting Implications of the Results:

On most issues, women generally are not more pro-military than men are.
For example, in the Lottopol Poll women and men both favored President Bush’s National Missile Defense Plan by an equal 3.6 to 1 ratio.

However, the Taliban’s treatment of women in Afghanistan may have influenced women’s view of the use military force to remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan.
Married women receive particularly harsh treatment by the Taliban.

In Afghanistan, single women who appear in public with a male who is not a relative receive 100 lashes — all in the name of Allah. Married women committing the same offense are stoned to death.

This may be why married women said that the USA should use military force to remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan by a ratio of 14.4 to 1 as compared to 6.6 to 1 for single women. In contrast, married men favored the use of force to remove the Taliban by a ratio of 8.8 to 1 which was very close to the 7.5 to ratio by which single men favored the use of force to remove the Taliban in the Lottopol Poll.
